Why did you make this work:
My style is typically detailed with layered architectural scenes, and I wanted to challenge myself to try simplified compositions and deeper colours. 'In The Pines' is part of a small personal collection where I aimed to create simple and peaceful images that still celebrate hand drawing and are rich in detail. I also explored creating very simple GIF animations, adding subtle life to the stills.
How was the illustration used:
Each year I produce personal collections of seasonal art print editions, to be featured in galleries and print shops. 'In the Pines' was used as a fine art print edition at The Red Door Gallery, Edinburgh. Since then it has been picked up by other gallery shops, and was also used for Christmas print materials and on projection screens at Re:Hope Church, Glasgow.
How did you make this work:
The piece was hand-drawn with pencil initially- a cathartic and slow process capturing the detail and grain of the forest. I then scanned and layered the drawing with scanned watercolour washes and digital colouring in photoshop, adding texture and adjusting lighting with photoshop brushes. The simple GIF animation was brought together at the end in photoshop.
